I live in Livingston County, Michigan. It has a population of approximately 191,995 according to the 2019 population estimate. The median income for the area is $80,897, although an estimated 5% of the population is impoverished (Census.gov, 2019). According to LiveStories (2013), Livingston County is not particularly diverse, with 96.7% of residents being white. Only .4% are black, .9% Asian, .3% American Indian/Alaskan Natives, and 1.5% are mixed/other.

I was unable to find specific health demographics for my county, so I will instead provide a few health demographics for the state of Michigan as a whole.

Breast cancer was diagnosed in 7846 female Michigan residents in 2016. This is the highest number of diagnoses since tracking began in 1985, where there were 5386 cases. However, this does not mean that incidence rates have truly increased, only that detection has improved. This is evidenced by the rate of deaths from breast cancer. In 1985, 1514 women died of breast cancer. In 2016, that number was reduced to 1390. There has been a steady, albeit miniscule, decline in deaths from breast cancer over the years (MDHHS, 2019a).

Hospitalization rates for all ages for diabetes sharply increased in Michigan in 2017. The average yearly hospitalizations for diabetes from 2011 to 2016 was 15,591. In 2017, diabetes related hospitalizations jumped up to 43,638. This shows that diabetes is a significant issue in our population (MDHHS, 2019b).

Conversely, hospitalizations for congestive heart failure decreased compared to the 2011-2016 average of 32,974, with 19702 hospitalizations for this condition. This could be an indicator that heart disease treatment has become more advanced and is preventing the development of congestive heart failure (MDHHS, 2019b).

Chronic obstructive pulmonary hospitalizations have increased from the 2011-2016 average of 24419 to 31007 in 2017. This is less of a significant jump, but illustrates that heart disease has not decreased despite incidence rates of congestive heart failure requiring hospitalization (MDHHS, 2019b).

All of the statistics I reviewed indicate that preventable health issues due to diet, exercise, and weight are a serious problem in Michigan. There are plenty of options for fixing these issues, but none of them are quick fixes with simple solutions. Unfortunately, I feel these issues will continue to add up until more stringent reform occurs.

Regards,
Dianna

  • What is the population of your county?

The county that I reside in is Hendricks, Indiana with a population of 160,940 people (United State Census Bureau, 2018).

  • What are some of the general population demographics of your county (e.g., age, sex, employment, race, religion)?

According to the 2018 American Community Survey, 74.4 percent of the population is 18 years and older, 13% 65 years and older, and the remaining 6% is under 5. There is a large veterans population present in with 94.2 % of them being males. 94.8% of the county is English spoken with 87.7% Whites, 6.6% Black or African America, 2.8% Asian.  (United State Census Bureau, 2018)

  • What are some of the general health demographics of your county (e.g., disability, fertility, health insurance)?

When it comes to health insurance in Hendricks County 6.4% of the community is uninsured compared to 9.4% of uninsured in the U.S. 10.8% of the population is disabled with 6% being ambulatory issues, 4.5% have difficulty living independently, and 3.8 with cognitive difficulty.

According to the Hendricks Country Health Department in 2018, the top 10 leading causes of death include: dementia/malnutrition, coronary artery disease, cardiopulmonary arrest, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease/stroke, lung cancer, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, and renal failure (Hendricks County Health Department, 2018).

  • What would you conclude about the population’s health that you researched?

This is an opportunity for you to expand your knowledge on how to apply descriptive statistics to retrieve data from public sources.

One issue that I concluded from this data was the lack of health insured in Hedrick’s country, the health of this community begins with affordable and access to quality healthcare. Affordable care allows for preventive health care and screenings that can minimize and reduce many of the causes of deaths. Many of the causes of death is due to heart and lung disease which most can be preventable and managed with physical activity, positive health behaviors, routine medical screenings, and affordable health resources.
