In the past few years, addiction professionals have been experimenting with finding new ways to motivate clients to engage in their treatment. Most clients do not begin therapy knowing the extent of the problems that their use has caused them. The Stages of Change model created by Prochaska & DiClemente (1982) helps professionals to understand their clients’ attitude towards working on recover. The Motivational Interviewing model came from this model to help professionals to use specific treatment strategies. For this Journal assignment, read the “Jane” scenarios beginning on p. 148 of your text. Choose one of the sections of the scenario and respond to these questions:What is Jane’s presenting problem?Describe the section that you chose (level of motivation change) and explain how she demonstrates characteristics of this level.Using one of the psychotherapeutic models from your assigned reading, propose a treatment strategy that you would use to help her to move to the next stage of treatment readiness (so, if you choose pre-contemplation- what would help her move to contemplation)?
