How Alcoholism Related to Poverty

My response to Mr. Banda after he shared his story

Mr. Banda’s story sounds like the typical scenario many individuals within underserved communities experience when they discover they have a medical condition that they cannot afford to treat. Therefore, to cope with the thought of impending doom, they turn to drugs or alcohol as a form of alleviation from the stress of life. This understanding that his choice led to the accumulation of debt for his family is understandable, but devasting because his family is at risk of becoming homeless depending on the level of their debt.

My response to him would be to first seek out medical aid through a non-profit organization like any Center for Diseases Control and Prevention or World Health Organizations nearby that is collaborating with various public health officials and local government officials and are offering HIV/AIDS treatment and rehabilitation. The second response I would offer is getting a financial advisor or a local businessman who understands the finances that could help manage his assets to settle his debt without going bankrupt (losing his home and farm). Lastly, I would advise him to seek out help in addressing his drinking issues, such as attending a faith-based organization that has rehabilitation programs on alcoholics.

 

Three social or economic inequalities influencing Mr. Banda’s actions and options

 

The first economical inequality affecting Mr. Banda’s actions and options is access to healthcare, which requires money for treatment, which he cannot afford because of his socioeconomic status.

The second social inequality influencing Mr. Banda’s actions and options is the fact that his socioeconomic status required him to live in a lower socioeconomic community. Furthermore, in these communities, many corporations tend to open many liquor stores in the area to profit from the suffering of people. Therefore, alcoholic beverages became easily accessible, and therefore, Mr. Banda was able to obtain the alcohol to drown his sorrows (McKinney et al., 2012).

This third social or economic social inequality influencing Mr. Banda’s actions and options is the lack of supporting public health intervention programs within the community. This was the reason why Mr. Banda’s only option to seeking alleviation was to drink instead of seeking help from a public health organization. Instead, alcoholic beverages were more accessible than health interventions. This issue could have been resolved if the government of the country took interest in the community and created a public health program that provides affordable treatment and rehabilitation services.

 

Leveraging the strengths of faith-based organizations/churches in the area to address the factors influencing Mr. Banda’s options

 

I think the churches should collaborate with local public health officials and the country’s government officials to create a health intervention program at the church that offers both physical and mental health intervention, treatment, and rehabilitation. I think faith-based churches would be a better option to host the health program because spirituality tends to be a factor that helps with the healing process and practicing patience, and can provide support for physical, and mental to the individuals (Nguyen, 2020). Lastly, for financial factors, I think the church can acquire money from the government to fund the community in any healthcare-related services. Also, the church can use the tithes they collect to help those with financial issues.
