The benefits of a policy analysis

A policy analysis is defined as a process that provides advice on potential public policies, such as comparing its pros and cons, identifying the issues, and providing resources and options that would make the policy more effective, and efficient to implement. This process is important because it helps public health officials to effectively outline their goals of the proposed policy, which allows them to make an estimated outcome regarding the implementation of that policy. Furthermore, to create a policy analysis there are various steps that must occur before implementation, such as the policy must provide client-oriented advice, informed advice, public policy decision, providing options and a recommendation, and the client’ power, and values must be taken into consideration (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2019; Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2017).

The purpose of a problem statement

The creation process of the policy analysis is broken down into various sections, such as the problem statement, which is defined as the section that identifies and addresses the issue. This statement is usually written in a question format and is normally structured in a single sentence (Teitelbaum & Wilensky, 2017).

A succinct, and clear problem statement

A public health issue that I am interested in is the prevalence of diabetes in underserved communities. Therefore, my succinct problem statement is “how can the government reduce prevalence rates of diabetes in underserved communities by implementing more reduced-price diabetes management programs?

Targeted audience

My targeted audiences are those within underserved communities, such as minority groups (Blacks and Latino/Hispanics), obese individuals, low-income families, and unemployed individuals. I chose this audience because according to data, those within the underserved communities have the highest prevalence rate of diabetes, they are the most neglected in terms of health care management, they face the highest rate of health care disparities, and lack of resources, such as diabetes management programs. Diabetes is an important issue that needs to be addressed because of its increasing prevalence and it is a contributing factor to various comorbidities, such as stroke, heart attack, obesity, and death. The policy is warranted because, with the implementation of diabetes management programs, community residents will be given recourses to manage their diabetes, therefore, improving the overall public health of the community (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2016).
