Public health nursing focuses on health promotion, community health services, public policy, and education. The role of the public health nurse is to provide clinical interventions, and teaching to communities, and the general public. Public health nurses work in a variety of settings including: home health/hospice care, community health clinics, schools, and even insurance companies. In public health, nurses may act as liaisons, advocates, and prevention specialists. An example of a public health nursing is community outreach via health fairs. In health fairs, nurses and other clinical professions visit schools, and other government funded businesses to provide teaching, and testing to students, and other participants. Examples of the type of testing include blood glucose checks, STD testing, and cholesterol tests. In addition, public health nurses may also perform screenings for high blood pressure, and body mass index evaluations. Public health nursing is very versatile, and interventions are tailored to meet the needs of the communities.

As of now, my local county is offering drive-through Covid-19 testing at pharmacies, fire departments, closed elementary schools, and occupational health settings. Nurses are being recruited to work in this high demand area of Dallas, TX. This is just one of the many ways that public health nurses make health services accessible to communities.

Public health is to protect health, prevent disease, and promote health and well-being in the community. It promotes healthy behaviors and prevent chronic disease.

I live in Los Angeles County, and they have 14 Public Health Centers. And they provide free and/or low-cost services to those with no insurance or regular health care provider, including immunizations and communicable disease testing and treatment. (Ferrer, n.d.) A specific public health center I have been to is called Hollywood/Wilshire Health Center. They provide TB testing and the treatments, STD treating and the treatment, and free immunizations to people of the communities.
