Asking a well-formulated research question is a starting point for conducting a quality research project and evidence-based clinical practice. The framework presented in a paper can be helpful for a clinician to formulate a question and search for an answer and for a researcher to develop a new research project (Echevarria & Walker, 2017). The classical approach is to identify a research question followed by a thorough literature search, keeping in mind the PICO criteria. If it is a well-defined research question, it will lead to an appropriate study design and methodology. Discussing research questions with knowledgeable peers, department. It is always good to focus on a single research question based on its relevance to one primary objective to drive the study design (Echevarria & Walker, 2017). Once I have formulated my research question, I need to keep track of the progress toward finding an appropriate answer and then applying the results to a specific patient population. With much thought, I have formulated my PICOT question.

P = patients with central lines on PCU floor

I = use of CHG bath solution

C = regular soap and water use for bathing

O = reduced number of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI)

T = 6 months

Does using CHG bath solution versus regular soap and water reduce the number of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) for patients with central lines on a PCU floor within six months?

I have arrived at this question because my PCU floor vigorously enforces CHG bathing antiseptic solution rather than regular soap and water for all patients, especially patients with central lines. My hospital strongly believes a CHG bath given daily along with weekly central line dressing change will reduce the number of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). This question is important because I want confirmation and evidence of my hospital’s belief in this practice. In addition, I am curious and want to uncover my hospital’s specific research.

PICOT question

My question:

In youths ages of 14-22  (P), do educational programs on substance abuse (I) compared to no educational programs  C) reduce substance abuse (O) within one year (T)?

Now that you have selected a PICOT question, discuss your strategies for conducting a systematic search/review of the literature in order to answer your question.  Explain how you will critically appraise the literature you have selected to determine the best evidence for this assignment.
