- The US is currently dealing with an imbalance in provider supply between primary care providers and specialists. What are some reasonable solutions to manage this? What type of incentives or policies would you create to encourage more medical (and nursing) students to become primary care providers?
- Nurses make up the largest group of healthcare professionals in the US. Briefly describe the different levels of nursing education and the role of advanced practice nurses in the healthcare system. What is meant by the term “physician extender”?
- Medical specialists are some of the highest paid healthcare providers. While in training, specialists have lower than average salaries. They incur a great deal of debt for their education (it’s said that the average medical student graduates with over $100,000 debt) and must defer their peak earning years for much longer than any other profession (in or outside of healthcare). Is this a sustainable system for medical education? Why or why not? What changes would you suggest?
- What is meant by “maldistribution” of physicians and primary care providers? What does the future look like in terms of ensuring that everyone has access to primary care? What changes would you recommend to ensure equitable distribution of providers in terms of specialty and geographic location?
