Tittle: Engaging Social Media with Political Advocacy

For this week’s discussion, we will look to the Twitter feed and locate a Tweet that describes a new health care initiative or an issue you are passionate about or that speaks to you.

1. Explore this initiative in detail and share your thoughts on the plan.  2. Discuss your thoughts about the Tweet and whether you can support the initiative or not. Be sure to use evidence in support of your position.  3. Within the political climate of government today, does this initiative have any hope of moving forward? Share your position based on the evidence.  4. Compose a Tweet (no more than 140 characters) that adequately addresses your response to the original post and share this Tweet in the discussion

Below is the tweet to respond to. you can click on the black box to access the full tweet.

My interest is in reducing the disparity in healthcare so the tweet that will be created to be related to it.

Who is in the Medicaid coverage gap? Of the 2.2 million people who do not have coverage in these states, 60% are people of color. 28% are Latino and 28% are Black. Refusal to expand is an issue of justice and equity.

The graphic is a blue background with large text that reads, Black, Latino adults represent more than half the coverage gap despite representing just over a third of all adults in non-expansion states. There are two pie charts: Pie chart on the left is labeled Coverage Gap, and the breakdown includes American Indian or Alaska Native (1%), Asian or Pacific Islander (1%), Other (2%), Latino (28%), Black (28%), White (40%). Pie chart on the right is labeled All Non Elderly Adults and includes White (59%), Black (19%), Latino (17%), Asian or Pacific Islander (3%), Other (2%).
