Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) Case Study
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) Case Study –
Irving Olson, a 75 year old male comes to see you today for follow up. He admits that he has neglected to tell you that he has had difficulty with urination for the past year. His wife, Ruth, reminded him to mention this today with you. After further workup, you diagnose Irving with BPH.
Questions:
- What are non-pharmacologic treatment strategies for the management of BPH?
- What pharmacologic treatment is used first line for Irving for the treatment of BPH (be sure to include, at a minimum, drug name, dose, route, frequency)? What other treatment options exist? Why did you choose your treatment option over other available options (if applicable)?
- What is the mechanism of action of the first line regimen selected discussed in #2? How does the mechanism of action correlate with the physiology/pathophysiology of BPH?
- What are the most common adverse effects of the pharmacologic agents discussed in #2?
- What is the cost of the first line regimen selected discussed in #2?
- Discuss pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the first line regimen selected discussed in #2? (be sure to include, at a minimum, onset, peak, duration, half-life, etc).
- What education would you provide Irving for the first line treatment discussed in #2?
Use this threaded discussion as a way to document your discussions and reasoning for the case study. Each student is expected to independently complete the case study and post their results here by 11:59 PM on November 25. Then discuss your differences and doubts. Once you are satisfied with your groups answers, one person from the group will post the group answers to the Case Study Summary Thread. Although this is a group assignment, part of the grade is individual effort which will be gauged by the engagement and quality of discussion within the group. Final summary submissions are due by 11:59 PM on December 2.
