Watson’s Caring Theory

INTRODUCTION

Discussion Prompt

Watson’s Caring Theory, a grand theory and conceptual model in nursing, is the underlying framework for United States University College of Nursing’s programs.  Identify a middle-range theory within her conceptual model. Clearly identify how she defines the concepts and propositions between them. Report them to the class using the form “psychosocial development (Concept A) progresses through (Proposition) stages (Concept B)”. Psychosocial development and stages are examples and NOT required for the assignment. Using the readings for the week, discuss why her work is considered a grand theory.

Watson’s theory of caring serves both as grand and complex theory.  Yet, it can serve as middle range theory in nursing in the future nursing, and also middle range theories are derivatives of its concepts (Kholoud & Omar, 2020). For this assignment, I would like to take one of the Carative factors, developing a trusted relationship. Establishing rapport (concept A) with patients (preposition) helps to develop an attainable care plan (concept B).

As stated above, developing a trusted and effective relationship with our patients is the beginning of everything. That is a moment that we introduce ourselves to our patients and what we will do for them. We need to invest everything to buy their attention so they know what to expect and what to expect from them. Furthermore, it takes efforts to earn someone’s trust, and the first interaction we make with our patient the moment we must not miss. Developing a helping-trust relationship embraces congruence, empathy, and warmth which allows patients to feel that their needs are considered (“Watson philosophy and science of caring,” 2020). To accomplish this, it does need us not only to give our attention to patients but also prepare ourselves depending on the uniqueness of our patients so we can plan indicated verbal and nonverbal communications. Also, establishing rapport includes therapeutic listening, which guarantees empathetic understanding (“Watson philosophy and science of caring,” 2020).

Helping relationship helps to make detailed and effective assessments because it aids patients to tend to open up and provide accurate information to the clinicians that promote patient outcomes and shared decision making (Allinson & Chaar, 2021).  Likewise, a high level of trust enables the perception of better care, greater acceptance of recommended treatment plans, increased compliance, and lower anxiety for the patients (Allinson & Chaar, 2021).

To sum up, developing a helping-trust relationship is a crucial factor in nursing care that assists with boosting the autonomy of our patients. Also, it aids us to maintain better self-awareness. Every time we try to focus on and discover the uniqueness of our patients and empower them, we tend to educate ourselves with diversity and minimize our unconscious bias. As a result, we can accomplish the care plans that we developed for our patients.
