An example of a dysfunctional conflict is a colleague (physician assistants, physicians), who is part of the patients care team, disregarding the APRN treatment plans and initiatives because they believe that APRNs do not have the knowledge to properly provide adequate care as they do. This issue has to properly be addressed and not avoided. By avoiding, this particular colleague will continue to disregard every APRNs assessment/treatment that he or she works with which will negatively affect the care team’s relationship and patient’s outcome. Conflicts between health care providers causes “care not provided in a timely manner to patients, care not being patient-centered, and less efficient care†(Cullati et al., 2019, p. 43).
The first step in addressing this issue is identifying the issue and checking one’s emotion. The second step is preparing the setting (Joel, 2018). Before responding to the colleague, it is important for the APRN to avoid his or her emotion from getting in the way of how he or she will respond to the colleague. Emotions can guide our responses into replying in an unprofessional manner that will worsen the situation. The setting is also important before confronting the issue. For example, in a patient’s room is not an appropriate place to hold this conversation whereas a private room is more appropriate. In the event this colleague has disregarded the APRNs plan in an inappropriate setting, the APRN can state “We will discuss this this issue at an appropriate timeâ€. After the discussion takes place and the conflict is not resolved, then this issue should be brought up to the appropriate authority. When situations arise, it is best to attempt to resolve the conflict before bringing it up to higher authorities because it is “generally thought to be a stronger inducement for action by higher authorities†(Joel, 2018, p. 333).
