Quantitative nursing research methods are strategies, techniques, and assumptions that explore numeric patterns. It gathers numeric data that is analyzed to show the relationship between variables, measure the differences between groups, or test hypotheses (Jansen & Warren, 2020). Quantitative or empirical research uses methodologies such as questionnaires, structured observations, self-reporting tools, and biophysical measures. Quantitative research is objective, its focus is concise and narrow, and it uses deductive reasoning to synthesize data. According to Allen (2017), quantitative research aims to “generate new knowledge and create understanding about the social world†and “a way to learn about a particular group of people, known as a sample population†(para. 2). In our previous discussions, I have mentioned that I will utilize a quantitative approach for my formulated research question. In PICOT format: In hemodialysis patients using CVC access, how does practice that follows CVC protocol, compared to practice without CVC protocol, affect the infection rate in the first 90 days of treatments?
On the other hand, Chicca (2020) introduced qualitative nursing research as approaching a phenomenon about which we have little to no knowledge and trying to understand its many facets. It generates evidence that helps nurses to identify patient preferences. It highlights the importance of holism, situated contexts, subjectivity, and intersubjectivity. Qualitative research utilizes interviews, documents, records, artifacts, photographs, journals, and observations of people, environments, or contexts. In my future role as an APN, I am interested in exploring how pre-renal patients, patients who are on dialysis, and their caregivers decide on choosing their dialysis modality.
