Metaparadigm & Watson
Dr. Jean Watson, both nurse and theorist, developed “Philosophy and Theory of Transpersonal Caring†or “Caring Science†(Misyuk, 2021). Within Watson’s nursing theory, concepts in addition to assumptions for application in nursing integrated 10 Carative factors. Influencing nursing and Watson’s theory is the Metaparadigm of Nursing established to focus on the patient and access to healthcare. The four components include person, environment, health and nursing. Both Jean Watson’s theory and the Metaparadigm of Nursing parallel in application of the discipline of nursing and formalization of illustration for theory development. By applying theory in practice or bedside, nurses can utilize both Watson’s theory of Carative factors as well as the Metaparadigm of Nursing. Within the 10 Carative factors, number 3 cultivates a sensitivity to self and others. This factor is also applied in one of the four components of the Metaparadigm of Nursing. By overlapping the two theories, application of sensitivity of self and others applies to the “person†within the Metaparadigm of Nursing. When considering the “person†one may consider only the patient. But, in health and well-being with promotion of nursing and care, incorporation of family, friends, the care-giver or whomever is also present with the patient will promote healing with a sensitivity to self and others. Sensitivity of self can be interpreted by questioning who is self? Is self the patient or the nurse providing care? By establishing nursing ethics, morals, esteem and perspective, the patient can be recognized with empathy and sensitivity to promote positive outcomes. If emotion is felt, an authenticity develops into self-growth and self-actualization of interaction by incorporating an additional theory of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Human needs are the ultimate reasoning behind nursing care and provides for a successful motivation to promote healing.
