Metaparadigm has four concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing. It a way to separate nursing from other healthcare disciplines. Watson’s theory encourages us to pursue and maintain a caring healing nature not only for ourselves but for our patients as well (Smith, 2015).

What separates nursing from the other healthcare disciplines? Throughout the past 21 months we have all witnessed commercials, and social media depicting nurses as healthcare hero’s, what makes the nurse more important than the physicians, lab, x-ray, respiratory or even housekeeping. Personally, I feel if you work in the healthcare industry you are a hero no matter what you do. I also feel that as a nurse I spend more time with my patient than any other discipline. I assess, create, and put into action a plan of care. I can request services from other disciplines but the are like an extension of caring for the patient.

Using Watson’s caritas theory and the metaparadigm concept of nursing we can learn how to care for ourselves so that we can providing care and compassion to our patients. This is not always easy to do.  When I am one on one with a patient, I have no problem providing that care and compassion, between patients I do not always have a caring attitude. I truly believe this because I need a change in my nursing career. I have worked hospice for almost 13 years I feel that may be too much. Due to the lack of staff, I am not able to have any down time to regroup and refresh.  I am not doing as Watson’s recommends by promoting sled care for myself.
