Experiences Implementing or Applying Nursing Theory into Practice
Nurses use theoretical models to organize thought processes for decision making and reasoning. What is the meaning of the education, what are you trying to achieve in this nursing situation? Relationships must be addressed to realize the results of the nursing process. The goal of nursing practice is to meet the needs of the patients including medical, psychosocial, and spiritual while maintaining their wishes. Competent nursing can meet the needs of their patients with the resources they have and honor the patient’s wishes (Chaiklin & Sievnet, 2019).
While providing education to my hospice team we must first determine what the goal is? Why are we doing what we are doing? This is not always to get team members on board as most people do like change. I attempt to explain the benefits of changing what we are doing and how it affects us and our patients. I allow individuals to offer input and help them feel like they own the goal.
CMS sends satisfaction surveys to our patients’ caregivers/families upon death. These survey results are publicly shared and affect our quality measures which in turn can affect reimbursement. All staff are educated on the questions that in the survey and how we as a team can better care for our patients and their families. Once I explained the questions and the importance behind them the staff was more on board.
While working in home hospice we must meet patients needs in the setting of their choice. The home in which they live is not always the best environment. The hospice team must honor their wishes and work with the resources that we have which is all part of a theoretical model. I feel that as nurses we use many theories daily in our work and do not realize it.
