Concept Exploration
Theories play a significant role in our lives. It is known that theories help guide not only our thoughts, but also bring meaning to what we see. The theory that I have gravitated towards is Abraham Maslow’s. Maslow’s theory is based on a pyramid with five categories which include, self-actualization, esteem, love and belonging, safety needs and physiological needs (McLeod, 2020). Maslow stated that human motivation (concept A) is based on people seeking fulfillment and change (proposition) through personal growth (concept B). These needs are based on a contingent where the lower needs must be attained prior to attending to the needs at the top of the pyramid.
According to McLeod (2020), people are under the false impression that they must satisfy a need 100% prior to moving to the next need. Many have been discouraged by Maslow’s theory because they thought it was an “all or none†phenomenon.
Maslow’s hierarchy is significant in nursing. Nurses can apply this theory in their own practice of patient care. As a nurse, when your needs are met, the focus to achieving higher level needs will be attained. These higher needs will include, self-esteem, sense of belonging and self-actualization.
In the NICU, we often deal with inadequate staffing, which is an issue for safety. This causes high levels of stress, which lead to nurses leaving the profession. A journal from the American Nurses Association (2011) states “Nurses need to feel safe in their environment, provide safe care for their patients, to have a sense of belonging to their organization and to feel empowered to do what they believe they should be doing.†It is evident that nurses will leave a workplace if their needs are not met.
