There are many forms of alternative preventative forms of healthcare. Many forms have been used for centuries all over the world. To list just a few traditional
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a form of alternative that involves the insertion of needles to various points in the body to alleviate different ailments. Acupuncture has shown to help several chronic pain conditions and scientists believe it’s due to the nerve stimulation from the needles. Some indications for acupuncture include chronic pain, osteoarthritis, migraines. Although there is no specified age range for acupuncture, I would think various ages would benefit from acupuncture. Risks of acupuncture include bleeding, bruising, soreness and risk for infection. Benefits include appropriate management of chronic pain and migraines, minimal side effects, and can be combined with other treatment modalities. (Brazier, 2022)
Pet Therapy
Pet therapy refers to various activities that include the use of an animal. This can be a dog, cat, or any other domesticated animal to assist with the healing of patients. Usually there is no direct treatment being applied through pet therapy, the interaction patients have with the animals helps with their healing and coping with chronic medical conditions. Pet therapy can benefit patients of any age group from pediatrics to geriatrics. Benefits include reduction in pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Pet therapy has shown effectiveness in the areas of cancer treatment, long term care, and even on hospital floors for recovering patients. The most notable risk in pet therapy has to do with infection control and making sure the animals are clean, vaccinated and well trained. (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2020)
Music Therapy
Music therapy is another type of alternative medicine. It uses the properties of music to improve patient’s mental health and overall well-being. Some activities involved include making music, singing, dancing, listening and discussing music. Music therapy can be beneficial to patients of any age. It can be useful to a long list of conditions including dementia, autism, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, heart disease, and substance abuse. Some of the risks noted are to be mindful for people who have any hearing issues to check with their audiologists prior to music therapy and any music therapy that involves dancing or excessive movement may not be appropriate for those who have impaired moving abilities.
