Foundations of Health Promotion

 

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity” (2022). On the other hand, health problems may be a disease, illness, or a congenital or hereditary condition that impairs the health or functioning of an individual. As a provider, it is crucial to understand how our patients define health to educate and provide clarification as needed to prevent any miscommunication (Edelman & Kudzma 2018). It also allows providers to see if there are any misconceptions about their health or disease. For many of us, dealing with an illness is often easier when the reason for it is understood.

We have made many advancements within healthcare. There has been a massive shift from acute care to preventative care. Advance practice registered nurses (APRNs) are heavily involved in disease prevention and health promotion. Working in family medicine, I’ve seen nurses take on a less traditional role and place a more significant emphasis on educating, advocating, and researching. By understanding how our patients define health, we can improve the quality of care. 

Many theoretical models are very valuable, but I find the role performance model very interesting. In this model, health is measured by the ability to perform social roles. Role performance includes work, family, and social functions, with performance-based on societal expectations. This model is very different from other models because it measures health not  by physical aspects but rather by how they act and communicate with others (Edelman & Kuzma, 2018).
