Research is a scientific method of answering specific questions or developing a better understanding of a specific topic within a specific field or subject area. Each research conducted builds on the next to improve areas of knowledge and understanding, improve care, decision making, and most importantly clinical practice.
Evidence based practice is the integration of the latest proven scientific evidence with clinical experience and knowledge, along with the patient’s individual clinical need. The combination of proven scientific evidence, clinical knowledge and expertise improve clinical practice thus produce favorable patient outcomes.
Using evidence to guide practice eliminates the use of outdated practices and gives light to a more scientific and effective method to meet the patient’s individual need. However, it is also important for the healthcare professional to be able to discern the value of research as it relates to specific patient population, clinical practice, and care.
Evidence based research intervention projects can be identified as scientifically proven instructions or treatments to improve practice or health. These instructions or treatments must first be proven to be effective by scientific research before being implemented. The creation of a nursing knowledge project is identified as just that, a research project which seeks to gain scientific knowledge of a particular subject, treatment, or clinical practice.
While research, evidence-based practices, evidence-based research intervention projects and creation of nursing knowledge projects are all intertwined they all aim to produce one particular goal, which is to build knowledge, improve clinical practice, care, and health of all patients.
