Nurses differ from other professions or disciplines in that they practice a wide range of skills and take a holistic approach to patient care. They have an important role in promoting health, avoiding sickness, and caring for all persons, including the handicapped and those who are physically or psychologically ill. Nurses prioritize well and make life-changing choices while remaining calm under pressure (Karaca and Durna, 2019). They are also tasked with consoling and reassuring patients who may be quite nervous due to their bad health. Nurses understand how important it is to pay attention to detail in their profession. It keeps patients safe while also promoting healing. A single piece of information is frequently insufficient to pinpoint the root cause of a patient’s symptoms. Because of their frequent bedside encounters, nurses are usually the first to notice if a patient is dehydrated, developing an illness, or in the early stages of dementia, for example. They are ideally placed to detect minor changes that might lead to earlier treatment and faster patient recovery.

The adaptability and innovation exhibited by so many nurses have enabled nursing to evolve into what it is today, serving as the cornerstone for good care in various healthcare institutions (Paans et al., 2017). Better patient outcomes, greater levels of patient satisfaction, lower staff turnover, and higher job satisfaction are all associated with effective cooperation in healthcare. Nurses also recognize that the shared knowledge and experience enable them to explore all treatment options before deciding on the best course of action. The efficacy of nurse communication with other healthcare professionals has a significant impact on patient care and results. Nurses who learn to demonstrate empathy and compassion correctly develop a closer relationship with their patients. Integrity is essential for every nurse’s personality (Salmond and Echevarria, 2017). As patient advocate, nurses may speak up to physicians, fellow nurses, family members, friends, and even the patient himself or herself in order to effectively serve them and achieve favorable outcomes. This is a challenging yet vital aspect of nursing. Nurses put patients first in all they do. 

Jean Watson’s theory of human caring is the best theoretical framework to explain the purpose of nursing. At the core of Watson’s Theory is the belief that caring consists of carative factors that result in meeting human needs. Watson’s theory supports the idea that caring contributes significantly to excellent patient care. Caring begins with being present and open to compassion, mercy, gentleness, loving-kindness, and equanimity toward and with oneself before one can offer compassionate care to others. In order for one to be able to accept, respect, and care for others, we must treat ourselves with loving-kindness, equanimity, gentleness, and dignity (Durgun and Okumus, 2017).
